“The fluidity of glass lends itself well to ocean forms, creating a natural relationship between my passion for the sea and my passion for hot glass. I feel it's important to work with the glass in a way that utilises the shapes that it naturally wants to assume, appreciating and working with the tendencies of the medium."

Justin studied Glass Production and Design at UCOL, Whanganui. After graduating in 2002 he travelled and worked alongside many New Zealand and international glass artists. During this time he developed his own unique take of ancient techniques like cane roll ups, murine, incalmo, filigree and latticino.

After a few years evolving and expanding his techniques, the lure of Northland brought about his return to Whangarei. This rural change has given Justin access to local beaches and a closer relationship with the natural surrounds. Days spent roaming Whangarei Heads beaches gives him the inspiration needed to create new work.

Justin Culina’s work is represented by art galleries throughout New Zealand and is found in private collections in the US, Canada, Australia, China and Japan. He is a member of the NZ Society of Artists in Glass and the Glass Art Society (International).

"Capturing the beautiful liquid forms and stunning colours that glass offers is the challenge. I hope that this love and respect for glass and the natural world is reflected in my work”.
