QUIET OBSERVATIONS
brings together four established New Zealand artists whose practices are grounded in close attention to the world around them. Through painting and ceramic stoneware, Peter Lambert, Tanya Blong, Amy Hoedemakers and Michelle Huizinga each offer a distinct perspective shaped by observation, intuition and material. While their approaches differ; from plein air landscapes and expressive abstraction to botanical painting and sculptural ceramics, they share a sensitivity to light, form, texture and the quiet moments that often go unnoticed.
Together, their works invite us to slow down, look closely and discover beauty in the familiar.
Quiet Observations is a celebration of artists who remind us that careful looking can reveal extraordinary richness in the everyday.
Tanya Blong’s art practice explores mythology, belief and the human desire for guidance and reassurance in times of uncertainty. Informed by extensive overseas travel, her work also examines leisure, idleness and the luxury of time, questioning how access, privilege and exclusion shape the ways in which we experience and understand the world.
Guided by her love of the outdoors Michelle Huizinga’s works generally start with a spark created while out exploring.
Michele named this series ‘Rockpool Dreams’ because they conjure up imagery of seaside rock hopping, from discovering whole kina shells and long green seaweed tentacles wrapped around rocks to ripples in the sand left by changing tides and the joy of finding little treasures.
Amy Hoedemakers creates atmospheric abstract landscape paintings inspired by the natural environment of Aotearoa. Through layered paint, luminous colour and fluid mark-making, she evokes the dreamy, dramatic and mystical qualities of the New Zealand landscape, creating immersive works that invite contemplation and offer a moment of escape and sanctuary.
Peter Lambert’s paintings celebrate the colour green, inspired by the luminous summer light filtering through native foliage along the banks of the Hangatahua / Stony River. Fine kawakawa branches create intricate patterns across the vibrant landscape, which he develops from plein air studies into larger studio works.
