WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE OCEANIC SURROUNDINGS OF AOTEAROA THAT MOST INTRIGUES YOU? IT'S WILDLIFE, BEING IMMERSED IN THE WATER, CONSERVATION ETC.

What intrigues me most is a captivating combination of elements. The relentless power and rhythmic movement of waves, the vast array of marine animals and their unique adaptations and the mysterious and hidden life that thrives beneath the surface.

YOU ARE A SELF TAUGHT ARTIST, WHEN DID YOU FIRST BEGIN TO EXPERIMENT WITH COPPER AS A MATERIAL?

Around 15 years ago I embarked on a collaborative artistic endeavour with another artist, which introduced me to the world of copper as a material. Through this collaboration, I began experimenting with copper and discovered its unique qualities and potential for artistic expression. I embraced the process of working with copper, exploring its malleability, and honing my skills through self teaching. Since then copper has become the central medium in my artistic journey, allowing me to bring my creative visions to life with its rich colours, textures and versatility.

WHAT DOES A REGULAR DAY IN YOUR WORKSHOP LOOK LIKE?

A regular day is a harmonious blend of creativity and craftsmanship. With copper sheet and various tools at hand, I meticulously cut, shape and mold the metal into intricate forms. Patience and precision are key as I solder, stitch, oxidise and add finishing touches to bring life to my creations. It's a fulfilling day immersed in the artistry of copper and the satisfaction of transforming ideas into tangible beauty.

DO YOU WORK TO THE SOUND OF THE SEA, WITH MUSIC OR A PODCAST?

I always have rock or pop music playing when I work. Artists like the Killers, James McMurtry, Taylor Swift, and podcasts by Jocko Willink are among my favourites, they provide a lively and inspiring atmosphere to complement my creative process.
