Alana Clarke
The ephemeral nature of landscapes, light, and atmosphere resonates deeply with me. Sometimes, it manifests as a quiet presence, while at other times, it exudes an undeniable vitality.
My paintings express an intense emotional reaction to the experience of being in a landscape, capturing both the complexity and simplicity of nature. They explore the interplay between darkness and light, the foreboding and the serene.
I find the coast particularly captivating. Its dramatic environment, with constantly shifting patterns of weather and light, highlights nature's unpredictability and transience. It is here that I feel the vastness of the world and engage in deep contemplation, reflection, and introspection.
The oil paintings I create in response to these experiences are often dynamic and dramatic, characterised by energetic brushstrokes and gestural marks that leave a powerful impression of place and time. In contrast, my charcoal drawings are more tranquil and introspective, evoking a dreamlike quality. Both mediums aim to engage the viewer, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences and emotional connections to the landscape.
Santie Cronje
Santie Cronje is a contemporary artist based in the beautiful South Waikato region. She's been exhibiting in New Zealand galleries since 2008, her early symbolic works exploring themes of settling into a new country and finding one's place within it. The year 2019 and the subsequent global pandemic marked a significant shift in her artistic expression. Santie shifted gears back to a more expressive style, reminiscent of her work prior to making New Zealand her home in 1999.
For the next few years, she dedicated herself to painting landscapes, paying homage to the beautiful scenery of her adopted country. However, Santie felt a profound need to reconnect more intimately through her art, which led her to look inward. Her most recent pieces have evolved into a form of visual journaling. Just as writing aids in making sense of our deepest thoughts, Santie's process of creating visual diaries through her artwork enables her to gradually unveil and discover deeper feelings. This approach not only fosters personal introspection, but also builds a bridge to those who engage with her art, offering viewers an opportunity to connect with their own emotions and stories.
Vicky Lord
"Journeyscape: Mapping Time and Space" is an exploration of the relationship between the individual and their environment. This collection of artwork captures the traverse through time and space, weaving past experiences with present observations to create a visual narrative. Each piece serves as a visual diary, a chronicle of moments that blur the lines between memory and reality.
Incorporating elements from older works, these paintings breathe new life into familiar forms, with texture, line work and dynamic mark making in layers, that feel like tapestries and maps. Vicky Lord offers an alternative view the world, prompting reflection on how we interact with and are shaped by the landscapes we inhabit.
For Vicky, a 'journeyscape' is an exploration of connection, perception, and the passage of time, rendered in a way that is both deeply personal and universally resonate.
Journeyscape ultimately challenges us to engage with our environment more thoughtfully, recognising the layers of history and meaning that inform our present experience.
Robin Ranga
Robin works in a variety of media responding to her interest in, and inspiration from, organic form and design. Because 'perception is a personal interpretation', many of her works explore compassionate issues.
Her practice has evolved into exploring and creating a visual platform concerning the plight of the displaced and the marginalised, who have faced oppression, prejudice and conflict. With a perception that humans of all hues, race or tribe, are a global family - members of immeasurable communities of settlers, all striving to live and flourish, her works focus on how humanitarian and social justice matters impact on the lives of children, families, society and countries.
Using art as her conduit through her practice, Robin strives to create an awareness and notions of empathy to provoke responses of compassion, tolerance and hope for better understanding between differences in ideology and perceptions.
