In Te Reo Māori, `miro' means to twirl, twist and spin - perfectly fitting for Miromiro (NZ Tomtit) as it darts about the forest. This little bird was also nicknamed torotoro, or scout by Māori for its habit of appearing from nowhere in the forest, and varies in plumage from white to brown to black, with some male varieties sporting golden yellow chests.
