Sheena Burton

Expressive and painterly works

Sheena Burton is a bold colourist whose vibrant paintings push boundaries and embrace a playful freedom from convention. Drawing on a background in textiles and design, her work balances classical influences with a distinctly contemporary twist.

Working with heavily pigmented oils on archival grade canvas, she builds expressive still lifes in the Impressionist tradition, using short, thick brushstrokes to capture the fleeting effects of light, colour and atmosphere.

Her evolving practice is inspired by the rhythms and cycles of life and nature, with lush floral-scapes that explore the interplay between realism and abstraction. Through her energetic use of colour, Sheena creates works that reflect the dynamic relationship between humanity and the environment.

Predominantly self taught, Sheena developed her artistic knowledge during a decade living and working in Europe, where she immersed herself in art history and the painting techniques of the Old Masters. She has furthered her practice through advanced colour theory at the National Art School in Sydney and ongoing study, alongside the guidance and mentorship of accomplished artists and lecturers. Her work is held in private collections throughout New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States and England.
