Tuna-Eels 2021 Series.
During the 2021 lockdown I had time in my day to sit by the river and marvel at the mysterious Longfin Tuna that live in its dappled darkness.
These creatures are endemic to New Zealand and endangered. They have an interesting and unique life cycle.
Longfin Tuna are elegantly beautiful but also have a primordial creepiness.
I have attempted to capture the essence of this dark beauty which is symbolic of much of Aotearoa.
I have created 12 Tuna designs using repetition of two geometric abstract shapes. The colour and form were inspired by Bauhaus art.
The originals have been painted using pochoir stencil technique, where the paint is applied by hand through a stencil.
As there are so many shapes I have created a code.
Each of the 12 shapes is represented by a letter of the alphabet. The Graphite Tuna are represented by the number 1.
The Kowhai tuna are represented by the number 2.
The < and > represent the direction the Tuna are facing.
For example, A<2 is the A shape, Kowhai Tuna facing to the left.
I have photographed the originals and made 30 prints of each available. Prints are Pigment Print on German Etching Paper, signed and numbered. The prints are the actual size of the originals, with a 5cm white border.
Note: The frame shown is made in a virtual setting to give an example of what the print could look like framed.
