Annie Smits Sandano’s native bird series extends her abstract, form driven approach from woodcut printmaking into painting, grounded in New Zealand iconography. The tūī is a central motif, used to explore colour, composition and movement, drawing on its distinctive form and cultural resonance. Her practice focuses on the interaction of line and colour through material and process. Influenced by painting, ceramics and printmaking, she creates work that engages the senses and evokes emotion, with colour, light, texture and shape as key concerns.
