Annie aims to create images and objects that operate on a visceral level, evoking emotion and transporting the viewer. Colour, light, texture, and shape are central concerns throughout her practice.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Annie has lived in New Zealand, Italy, and, until recently, the United Kingdom. She completed her Fine Arts education at Elam School of Fine Arts with Honours and at the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States.
Annie is primarily driven by an interest in exploring the fundamental interaction between line and colour through materiality and process. Her visual influences are wide-ranging, spanning painting, ceramics, and printmaking.
Much of Annie’s satisfaction in making arises from working with materials, and her approach is highly process-driven. Across the various disciplines in her practice, she often seeks to develop methods that are initially rooted in tradition-primarily analogue and intentionally laboursome, sometimes even antiquated.
Her limited edition prints are handmade using traditional analogue techniques, while her ceramic pieces are highly tactile and meticulously hand-built. Annie’s original paintings are often constructed using materials she has created herself or by adapting techniques borrowed and hybridised from printmaking.
