Beautifully organic in form, this vessel is handcrafted using the traditional slab and coil ceramic methods. After being hand-painted and etched, through a technique called sgraffito, it has been fired twice in the kiln - firstly to harden the painting and the clay. Then again to create the lustrous golden interior.
Amber is of Pakeha descent with connections to Ngati Wai through her child. She has developed her own unique style of art that is characterised by its use of Māori motifs, words, and proverbs. Amber creates art that would celebrate Māori culture and language, and has wanted her art to connect us to each other and to Aotearoa.
Believing that art can be a powerful tool for education and advocacy, Amber is committed to using her art to promote understanding and respect. Works are often illustrations of whakatauki (proverbial sayings) or waiata (Māori songs). The words are wise and up-lifting and they give a beautiful feeling to the art of love, hope and self-worth.
*These beautiful vessels aren’t designed to be used as vases. They will hold water but the exterior is unglazed so moisture may seep through and could cause staining in the case of plant water.
The interior golden glaze lustre is full of copper and manganese so is not considered food safe.
