The Pōpokotea/New Zealand Whitehead is a small songbird with a big voice. Living in noisy groups of eight or more, they are found only in the North Island of Aotearoa, preferring the canopy of tall native forest and dense bushland. Despite a dramatic decline in the late 19th century, the Pōpokotea population is abundant today.
