The stitchbird or hihi - (Notiomystis cincta)
The English name describes the birds short clicking call, which sounds like machine stitching. The stitchbird is one of our rarest birds and small managed populations are now on Kapiti Island, Tiritiri Matangi Island, Karori Sanctuary and Maungatautari.
This series of work uses our native birds as both subject and object. They have been given a character and a starring role in Jo's painting in order to voice her interest in the idiosyncratic and distinctive world we live in.
Jo Gallagher is a contemporary artist whose work explores the subtle interplay between memory, place, and identity. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes of New Zealand and the quiet rhythm of rural life, her paintings often balance abstraction and realism, evoking a sense of stillness and reflection. Jo works primarily as a contemporary realist but sometimes add a layer of humour into her compositions.
