The NZ Songbird by Jo Gallagher
The tui (Prosthemadera Novae Zealandia)
Tui have a most beautiful voice. They combine fluid, melodious bell-like notes with other sounds like coughs, cackles, clicks and whistles. Having two voice boxes is what enables these songbirds to perform such a distinctive myriad of vocalizations. Rather than just imitate their parents, they sample elements from their sonic environment and sew it into their song. This new collection allows me to explore the fun there is to be had with language, symbolism and entrenched beliefs in a quirky, humorous way.
Living in the small King Country settlement of Piopio provides Jo with rich visual and personal influences. She works primarily as a contemporary realist but more recently she has begun to add another layer of interest into her compositions that of humour!
