Miniatures Collection is a selection of 50 long exposure photographs made on film with a Rolleiflex twin-lens camera. Each seascape measures 90mm × 90mm and is printed with archival pigment ink on 36 g/m² Awagami Kitakata paper.

Miniatures Collection is conceived as a personal exhibition in a box. It can be opened and experienced privately, held in the hands and explored at one’s own pace. Its small format makes it an object that can be returned to and enjoyed over time. The patience involved in making the photographs is reflected in the slower, more personal experience of looking through them.

Long exposure photography requires patience. Once a subject is found, the right light, tide and weather conditions need to come together. Working on film introduces an element of mystery, as the way movement is transformed by the long exposure is only revealed once the film is developed. Exposures can last from several seconds to minutes, allowing movement to gradually change the appearance of the scene within a single frame. Water becomes soft and transparent, sometimes resembling fog, while the fixed elements of the landscape remain defined within its movement. Rather than simply documenting the scene, the long exposure transforms it into something that could not otherwise be seen. The resulting images have a quiet, suspended quality, shaped by time rather than the capture of an instant.

The meditative aspect of this process continues in the presentation of the work. The 50 photographs are printed on a very thin and lightweight washi paper whose sensory qualities complement the softness of the photographs. The scale and material of the collection shape how the photographs are experienced. Rather than encountering a single large print, the viewer handles a small sequence of images, slowly moving through the collection one photograph at a time. The sound and movement of the thin paper, the glassine sleeve and the box become part of the experience.
