Manaaki Kākā depicts a pair of young kākā perched in native New Zealand fuchsia (kōtukutuku). Manaaki Kākā was inspired by a photograph by conservationist and photographer Judi Lapsley Miller, capturing two young kākā Hannah monitored in their nest as they grew. ‘Manaaki’ means to care for, sustain and protect, reflecting the efforts of those working to safeguard kākā throughout Aotearoa.
