Jane McCulla has travelled widely and has always lived close to the sea, so her ever changing vistas have been a constant inspiration for her ceramic work. The Harbour Rim series of cups is reflective of her current surroundings, especially around the Canterbury coast.
Experiencing rural or remote landscapes and seascapes, Jane is fascinated by momentary glimpses, indexical traces, entropy processes and archaeological references, communicating human's presence and time. The latter and the cycles, rhythms and routines of life lead her to manipulate clay, earth’s primary material, to relate a personal dialogue with her environment.
