Kirsty Nixon

Kirsty's imagery often brings the native bush to the foreground to give the feeling of stepping into the scene.

Kirsty believes that if art is a part of someone, it reveals itself at a very young age.

Although she drew and painted as a child, she first pursued art seriously at 18, beginning with watercolours. She spent the early part of her career in advertising, but the pull of art led her to become a full-time artist in 1997.

Kirsty now works primarily in acrylics, though she values her early experience with watercolour for teaching discipline and patience. Since switching to acrylics in 1994, she has enjoyed their freedom and visual impact. While she has explored various subjects, she is continually drawn to the New Zealand landscape, often foregrounding native bush to give viewers the sense of stepping into the scene, with coastline or horizon gently receding in the background. Native birds are a prominent feature in her work, with tuī and cheeky fantails frequently taking centre stage in their natural environments.
