John mixes his own glazes using ashes and materials he gathers. His ceramics are made for everyday use and are collected by people around the world.
John built his first kiln in 1971 and, after graduating from Wellington School of Design in 1974, travelled extensively, working in potteries around the world. His diverse career has included roles in the New Zealand film industry as an art director, set and props maker, as well as architectural design, where he has designed and built homes throughout Auckland and beyond.
In 2017, John established a ceramic studio, working with wood, oil fired salt, electric and gas fired kilns. He predominantly works in the Japanese Oribe style, creating deliberately deformed, avant garde vessels decorated with expressive iron pigment and varied glazes. His practice is also influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, which embraces the impermanence, incompleteness and imperfection of life.
