Blue Black

Contemporary Ceramic Artist

Blue's work often only fully takes shape during assembly.

Blue Black gained a Certificate in Fine and Applied Arts from Whanganui Regional Community Polytechnic in 1991, followed by a Diploma in Ceramic Arts with Honours from Otago Polytechnic. Returning to Otago in 2005, Blue completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts and has since exhibited widely across New Zealand.

A process-driven maker, Blue forages materials from gardens, recycling collections and everyday objects, transforming them through layers of clay slip. Their work is shaped by place and experience, evolving organically in the act of making until fully realised. Blue Black experiments widely, often dipping objects in layers of clay slip.

Their work is strongly influenced by a move into a light-filled, spacious studio, where aspects of past and present events appear clearer and brighter. Process drives the work: ideas and intentions emerge through making, and pieces often only fully take shape during assembly. For Blue, the act of creating is both grounding and central to their practice.
