Collection Name: I May Be A Weed But I’m Still Gorgeous
This suite of work draws attention to Kaitiakitanga (guardianship) as a way of managing the environment.
Patsy Flecther's paintings show weeds which she has incorporated to draw attention to their importance to the eco-system as we enter times of water conservation.
She also sees weeds as a metaphor for the overlooked in our society. Under Kaitiakitanga all are protected. The future of humanity is dependent on values like Kaitiakitanga.
Patsy Fletcher's art bursts with vivid colour and thoughtful symbolism. Her work captures the beauty of everyday life, offering a sense of lightness and uplift in contrast to the weight of the modern world. Influenced by the Vanitas tradition of still life painting, she takes classic symbols of impermanence—like flowers—and reinvents them with intense, vibrant tones. In doing so, she shifts the focus from loss and decay to celebration and vitality, breathing new life into these age-old themes.
Through her art, Patsy encourages viewers to embrace the present moment, to surround themselves with colour and life, and to find solace and inspiration in the beauty that exists around them.
