Harakeke (flax) weaving by weaver Bernadette Ross
---mm Diameter
As a child, Bernadette Ross loved fishing, and it was always a special treat when she was allowed to go. In more recent years, she found herself fishing again, this time at the end of a warm, fine day, accompanied by an elderly friend in their boat. Together, they would sit patiently on "the spot," waiting for the sun to dip below the horizon. During that quiet, fading light, the water would shift through every shade of blue in the East, and green in the West, almost turning to purple. And then, as if on cue, the fish would come. It was in those moments that Bernadette felt the urge to weave the water, to be part of the magic unfolding around her. The trick, she said, was to see if she could weave it what she saw.
