Sam Mathers’ work is shaped by his coastal home and travels throughout New Zealand and beyond, drawing on the people and places he encounters. He extracts instantly recognisable elements and reworks them through scale, colour and mixed media to create layered, dimensional works that invite conversation.

Passionate about process and mechanics, Sam explores new methods with a graphic sensibility, using language and cultural references to build multiple layers of meaning. Though the work may appear organic, each mark, scratches, paint drips and weathered traces, is deliberately considered. Bold use of colour reflects his emotional state, leaving space for viewers to form their own connections and narratives.
