Autumn Equinox was built upon a solid skeleton sketch in black oil pastel, bringing together four landscape views, one from each cardinal direction around her home in Onaero. Over many months, layers of thinned, transparent glazes were slowly applied to develop the final painting. Greens, browns, and black ground the work, speaking to the land, while orange evokes sunrises, sunsets, and the rich, burned russet tones of autumn. Joni completed the piece exactly a year after it began.
Influenced by her upbringing within Waldorf education, including tertiary study in art therapy within the same philosophy, Joni draws on the discipline of veil painting in this new series. This process involves building delicate layers of pigment, each allowed to dry before the next is applied, gradually unfolding over time. Guided by intention and patience, the work emerges through a quiet, contemplative focus.
