The New Zealand rifleman or titipounamu (Acanthisitta chloris)
Giclee fine art reproduction is printed on 340gsm cotton rag, acid free paper using archival inks. It is recommended to frame your print and hang away from direct sunlight.
The rifleman is the very smallest of our endemic birds at only 8cm long. The rifleman's English, Maori and scientific names all refer to the male green plumage: NZ Infantry riflemen wore green coats, pounamu is the Maori name for greenstone, and chloris is Greek for yellowish green. This collection allows Jo to explore the fun there is to be had with language, symbolism and entrenched beliefs in a quirky, humorous way.
Jo Gallagher is a contemporary artist whose work explores the subtle interplay between memory, place, and identity. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes of New Zealand and the quiet rhythm of rural life, her paintings often balance abstraction and realism, evoking a sense of stillness and reflection. Jo works primarily as a contemporary realist but sometimes add a layer of humour into her compositions.
