Marsden Flower greenstone hei matau II
A Hei Matau pendant hand carved in New Zealand Marsden Flower greenstone or Pounamu by master carver Tyson Lynes.
Complete with an adjustable plaited waxed braid cord.
65mm height x 35mm width
Matau means hook, and the carved ornament recalls the legend of Maui who fished up the North Island of New Zealand.
The hei matau was taken as a good luck charm on fishing trips, the mythical and spiritual powers of pounamu keeping away evil spirits and ensuring a safe return. This meaning is translated today as "safe travel" and "strength and determination".
This is a one of a kind piece by virtue of the amazing greenstone from which it was carved so it will be permanently removed from our gallery when sold.
For thousands of years humans have used greenstone for tools, weapons, adornments, currency and believed in its healing properties.
