Jane Brenton-Rule’s latest series of small oil paintings features familiar items of domestic life. Jane is well known for her delightfully whimsical paintings of domestic animals as well as colourful cows.
“I started painting these littlies in March when in level 4 lock down. The message not to over stock the pantry was clear, I did however over stock the pantry and that act became this unexpected source of creative inspiration. A painter must paint, so I began using the contents of the kitchen cupboards as subject matter. Now I study supermarket shelves looking for interesting packaging. And that has led me to think about the volume of product packaging we are accepting of. Makes for good painting subject matter but really, such excess! I can’t see this lasting and look forward to seeing how the next generation tackles the issue of sustainability in the area of food packaging/storage.”
