The Royal Portrait by Jo Gallagher
The sacred kingfisher or kotare (Todiramphus sanctus vagans)
This series of work use our native birds as both subject and object. It allows me to explore the fun there is to be had with language, symbolism and entrenched beliefs in a quirky, humorous way. They have been given a character and a starring role in my painting in order to voice my interest in the idiosyncratic and distinctive world we live in.
Living in the small King Country settlement of Piopio provides Jo with rich visual and personal influences. She works primarily as a contemporary realist but more recently she has begun to add another layer of interest into her compositions – that of humour!
