Tabatha Forbes - In another light : Pukeiti Project
Kina NZ Design + Artspace is pleased to host an exhibition coinciding with the Powerco Taranaki Garden Festival, based on the Pukeiti Rhododendron Garden.
"Given the vast history of representation surrounding the beautiful rhododendron flower and the origins of the Pukeiti Gardens, this project is literally an attempt to present a different view of both place and plant.
The celebration of particular rhododendrons, their names and significance to Pukeiti - has not been over looked but the final works act as signposts back to the garden and plant itself. Representational and figurative, the lines drawn with light are minimal abstractions of organic forms; collisions with historic aesthetics (the expected representation) and manufactured interference. This is not for its own sake. It’s a diversion. Look around the light, look into it, consider the reflection and beyond that, the sheer magnificence and weirdness of the plant itself.
The value of nature to me, is significantly beyond the immediate gratification of a pretty flower. Pukeiti instils the very best of our ability to nurture, conserve and celebrate nature resulting in a necessary reminder of the value of beauty and tranquillity."
