Artist - Rebecca Phillips

Rebecca Phillips explores the fragility of life and beauty through her paintings of flowers - an ironically common object of beauty. Once cut off from their life source, a flowers beauty while still evident suddenly has an expiration date – it will surely fade. In our attempt to capture their beauty we ultimately destroy it, yet in Phillips’ paintings the flowers and plants become immortal in a vain attempt to preserve them. Inspired by traditional interior floral patterns, Phillips uses flat shapes of colour to construct her paintings, paring back the flowers until they are the essence of themselves, still recognisable, yet distilled from reality by their own transient nature. Rebecca Phillips grew up in New Plymouth and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with honours from Massey University in 2010. She now lives in Wellington.
