Artist - Phil Brooks

London-born Brooks studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Architectural Association School of Architecture. After a career in interior design, she started working with clay in 2014 and followed this up with study towards the Diploma in Ceramic Arts at the Otago Polytechnic in 2015. Phil Brooks was a finalist in the Portage Ceramic Awards in 2017 and 2018.

Brooks' works are the result of the technique of hand-coiling. Clay is rolled into long rolls or coils. These coils are then placed on top of another and the vessel takes shape. The coils are merged into eachother creating a smooth finish. Often a surface decoration is applied, in many cases representative of Brooks' background in architecture and design.

"My work is hand coiled and I am interested in strong forms in which the texture and colour of the fired clay play an important part. The immediacy of the medium is a great release from the strictures of the drawing board that kept me once-removed from the objects & spaces I was designing".
