Alana Clarke creates lively botanical and atmospheric landscape paintings from her home studio in New Plymouth. Her work narrates nature’s moments in our unique landscape - dramatic and/or serene, instinctively determined by a strong seasonal expression. Working predominantly in oils, Alana’s style is expressive and intuitive. 

Alana obtained a Bachelor of Design from Massey University School of Design, Fine Art and Music and worked for many years in the design industry in New Zealand and abroad before turning her focus to her true passion - creating beautiful, emotive works of art. Her eye for form and colour and the ability to capture the movement of light leaves a powerful lasting impression of place and time. 

“The year 2020 has been a strong reminder for me to not take for granted the freedoms we have in this beautiful country, to take a breath from our busy lives to reconnect with family and friends, to think about how we can best support those in our community who have found this year particularly tough and to appreciate and find joy in the everyday. The ‘humble’ hydrangea which has dominated Alana’s botanical subject matter for some time now is a perfect example of how something so simple can bring pleasure to many. “I aim to bring a smile with these cheerful paintings - to capture the charm of a hydrangea bush in full summer bloom and to evoke a wistful nostalgia.”
