Alison Blain is a well established Wellington jeweller. Her creations of gold and silver jewellery are sought after and held in private collections. Alison's custom-cut stones combine both her passion for colour and traditional craftsmanship. Her pieces range from uncut semi-precious to finely finished designs. Here at KINA we have been awed by her creations for 2 years and would love to share a little bit more about what makes this artist tick.
How long have you been creating? Has it always been in this medium?
I have always been a creator and before jewellery it was clothing design. For some years I had a couple of stores in Wellington, with a workshop upstairs where we created the clothes.
About 10 years ago I wanted to be learning some new skills that would give me a parallel career and be a good fit with my existing one. I had played about with jewellery for a little while, and decided to take it on seriously. What a good excuse to go to India and study with experienced goldsmiths!
With the result that my practice is two-fold: The week is split evenly between bespoke clothing design and creating jewellery. I have 2 separate workshops.
If you weren’t creating your art works what would you be doing?
Likely to be creating in some other medium....perhaps painting.
Have you passed your techniques onto others?
I do take interns from Massey, Ucol and Fashion Tech in my bespoke clothing workshop. In the future I may have time to pass on my jewellery skills too.
Is there a specific piece you have created that is dearest to you heart? If so, why?
As I make from the heart, I pretty much love everything I make!
If you could plan your perfect day what would it consist of from start to finish?
Every day is a perfect day and I am so keen to get to work in the morning. By 7.30am I am in my clothing studio, designing/liaising with clients ( clothing and/or jewellery commissions). Then at 3.30pm I go to my jewellery workshop (at home) and create jewellery through till 7pm. Love my job!
What is your favourite meal and who would prepare it for you?
Fortunately my husband Alexander is the MasterChef in our house...he creates the most amazing dishes. He is my Food Hero.
If you were to be an animal which one would you be?
Most likely to be a Bower Bird...an interesting creature who collects and decorates the nest, and very attracted to something that shines and sparkles.
