Show & Tell. Jeweller Jen Laracy

Jen Laracy is a Taranaki treasure. We hunted her down and were so happy when she began bringing her work here to KINA. Jen's re-use of materials not only makes our eco-friendly minds happy - her craftsmanship and attention to details makes our hearts flutter.
We are so happy to have your part of the KINA family! Jen your work is stunning!
How long have you been creating? Has it always been in this medium?
For as long as I can remember.  It’s what we did for fun as a kids.  Mum had some ‘art drawers’, and we always had paints and pencils, clay and other resource we could use anytime.  She really encouraged us to create from an early age. Creativity is really valued as a means of expression within my family and I have a lot of support in that sense.
I thought I would be a painter, so studied visual arts at Whitireia, but ended up majoring in fine metals instead. My Granddad was a jeweller and I was lucky to have been able to spent time with him in his workshop, so I would say that has had an influence over my choice of medium and constant inspiration. I love finding the right mix of materials and the balance between the finish of the metal and setting of the stone.
Who do you look to or how do you find your inspiration?
Something I see in a  dream, archaeological finds, making lists and staying up too late, my old workbooks and journals. My kids (who are far more creative than I will ever be). I think my environment effects the way I see adornment.  When I am working on the farm, or what  washes  up on the beach.
I think it can reflect in my work.
If you could plan your perfect day what would it consist of from start to finish?
I would say waking up late, refreshed after good dreamy sleep,  lots of good coffee and music, avocado on toast.
Then a long happy day spent with my kids and husband on a new beach or river, having fun finding treasures and exploring.
Then a campfire dinner and a night under the stars.  Right now that would be ideal.
What is your favourite meal and who would prepare it for you?
I could go back in time.  Probably a Sherpa meal From the Jewel of Nepal in Newtown, Wellington... Yum!
If you were to be an animal which one would you be?
Some sort of bird I think.  A hawk.  It would be the absolute best to be able to fly
