Clare Makwana lives in the heart of Nelson and creates print works from her home studio. Not only was her space filled with beautiful objects and artwork, she was a lovely host and now a friend. We love having Clare's works here at KINA. Keep an eye on this one - she is one clever human!
How long have you been creating? Has it always been in this medium?
We were always making things as kids and it has just carried on …
My first printmaking experience was a standard four art lesson with Miss Perkins. I was hooked from that moment!
Who do you look to or how do you find your inspiration?
There are so many amazing printmakers both here in New Zealand and globally it is hard to think of a few names. I have always loved Japanese woodcuts. I find my garden inspiring as I love flowers.
If you could plan your perfect day what would it consist of from start to finish?
My perfect day would include beaches or a sparkling river and of course hot sunshine! Great food and drinks, family, friends and definitely music and dancing. Fairy lights and candles would also be cool!
What is your favourite meal and who would prepare it for you?
I love Japanese food and I think cheesecake would have to feature! A very good cook.
If you were to be an animal which one would you be?
My dog Audrey has a wonderful life that I think I could slip into for a little while.
