Artist - Simon Lewis Wards

Simon Lewis-Wards is an Auckland based artist who creates works with a pop Kiwiana aesthetic. His work is joyful and fun, finding inspiration in nostalgia unique to New Zealand. He works predominately with glass and ceramic using techniques of casting and slip-casting. He enjoys making work that sparks a smile in the viewer and conjures childhood memories.

During his younger years Simon worked as an assistant at a glass-blowing studio in Australia and this is where he developed his skill set in both blown glass and the lost wax glass method. When his school friends set up their glass studio back in New Zealand Simon was encouraged to stay on and help out. Up until that point Simon's experience with glass had stopped with bowls and vessels - object that didn't spark much feeling.

Wards went on to set up his own studio in Auckland, New Zealand which he works from today. It was here in the studio that Simon was inspired to create his recent works. Objects that offer humorous narratives and are playful and uplifting. Part of the collection and most popular are the lolly mixtures you found in the local dairy as a child. Or the power poles you counted while on those long car trips to the holiday spots.

Simon Lewis- Wards exhibits his work in select galleries in New Zealand. From his studio he produces a range of exhibition workand collaborates with other artists.
